Description
As with the Year 3 and 4 Mixed Class courses, the Year 5 and 6 Mixed Class is also split in to 2 years’ worth of work, Syllabus A and Syllabus B. This ensures no repetitions of lessons for pupils who remain in the mixed class for the second year.
Syllabus A recaps the previous years’ learning and looks at political historians as their historical enquiry studies. Children will then learn about ancient societies such as the Beakers and the origins of Stonehenge and its archaeological relevance. Having looked at the Olympic games, daily life of the Romans and Saxon language, it’s time to move on to the Aztecs and the Ming Dynasty in China. Children will then head over to America to learn about the Puritans, then back to Europe to find out about the French Revolution. As the course approaches modern day, pupils delve into the Apache tribe and Geronimo, before dissecting society since the war. Has life changed for the better?
Syllabus B also begins with historical enquiry, but this time, pupils look at military and social history. They then make mock CVs and apply for a job as a historian – but will they get the job? We then discuss the extinction of the dinosaurs and the Ice Age. Children then travel through time, looking at Africa during the Stone Age, then Greece in the Bronze Age. Daily life in the Roman Empire is studied, as are elves, fairies and land spirits, as found in Norse mythology. As we approach modern day, climate change during the middle ages is investigated, as is a typical Tudor school day. Children then interview famous Victorians on their pretend TV show, before learning about voting and elections in early twentieth century Britain.
Interactive resources include staging our own ancient Olympic games, entering into Roman’s Got Talent contest and role playing a day in the life of a Puritan!
